ARLINGTON, Va. — United States Nuclear Industry Council (USNIC) President and CEO Todd Abrajano today released the following statement in response to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) Fiscal Year 2027 budget request and the agency’s ongoing reorganization efforts:
“USNIC recognizes the vital role the Nuclear Regulatory Commission plays in ensuring the safety of new reactors and appreciates the agency’s efforts to review license applications efficiently,” Abrajano said. “While the FY2027 budget includes reduced funding and staffing levels, the NRC’s ongoing reorganization presents an opportunity to modernize the agency, streamline processes, and rightsize the NRC to operate more efficiently. If implemented successfully, these reforms can help ensure the NRC continues to review applications in a timely manner while supporting the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies. A modernized NRC will strengthen the United States’ ability to deploy new nuclear domestically and compete globally as Russia and China continue to expand their nuclear exports.”
